Honoring the Life and Legacy of Mitchell Salazar

Sunrise November 26, 1961 -

Earlier this month, our community lost one of its most beloved and dedicated advocates, Mitchell Salazar. Mitchell lived life with boundless energy and fearlessness, inspiring generations of those who knew him.

In honoring Mitchell, IFR celebrates a life lived with tireless purpose. We reflect and honor the work and accomplishments of a lifelong community leader, as well as a brilliant and beautiful soul. Mitchell dedicated his life to community and was a fierce advocate for those who needed it the most. He believed in and saw the potential in everyone and loved unconditionally.

Through his work with the Real Alternatives Project (RAP), IFR inherited much of Mitchell’s perspectives on youth development. Mitchell had a profound impact on IFR’s youth program, La Cultura Cura. His legacy of supporting meaningful opportunities and alternatives for youth remains etched in IFR’s youth programs and services. “The history of youth programs, the Mission District, and San Francisco can’t be written without talking about Mitchell’s many contributions,” offered IFR Executive Director Gloria Romero who knew Mitch for almost 30 years, beginning at RAP. “I learned so much about youth justice and commitment to community from Mitchell.”

We take heart in knowing Mitchell’s legacy lives on through those who knew him. The outpouring of love and stories from individuals of how Mitch impacted their lives is a testament to his life of service to community. As he joins the ancestors and begins his life in the Spirit World, he will be truly missed. May his journey be surrounded by love and light. We send our deepest condolences to his family and sincere gratitude for sharing Mitch with us.
