AGENCY DESCRIPTION:
Instituto Familiar de la Raza, Inc. is a multi-service community health and social service agency with an emphasis on serving the Chicanx/Latinx/Indígenx community in San Francisco. Services include a wide range of mental health and behavioral health, HIV-related services, and social services, including health promotion, education, prevention, early intervention, case management, support groups, cultural interventions, and social and spiritual engagement. IFR serves children, youth, adults and families, and multiple subpopulations, including youth, the Indígena, and LGBTQ+ youth and adults. The organization has a rich history of working collaboratively with other agencies to meet the needs of the Chicanx/Latinx/Indígenx community and other cultural/racial communities in San Francisco. We accomplish this by providing culturally integrated services rooted in our three pilares: Tú eres mi otro yo, La cultura cura, and Sí se puede.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Director of Development and Communications is part of a dynamic and enthusiastic team charged with guiding the organization toward a sustainable future by developing and executing strategies that align organizational objectives with effective fund development, revenue-generating, and communication strategies.
The position reports to the Executive Director (ED) and works closely with the Board of Directors and IFR team to promote an organizational culture of philanthropy. Under the direction of the Executive Director, and as a member of IFR’s Concilio Executive Team, this position is an active collaborative partner with agency leadership in visioning, leading, and implementing IFR’s mission and strategic goals, plans and objectives. This position identifies opportunities for growth, innovation, and partnerships to advance the organization's strategic objectives and enhance the organization's visibility and brand image. This position manages and executes IFR’s annual fund development plan to achieve the outlined annual revenue/fundraising goals.
In managing the communications for the agency, the position supervises and works with the Communications Specialist to develop an annual internal and external communications plan across multiple platforms to elevate the agency’s visibility in the community, generate interest in the organization and its programs, and raise awareness of issues impacting IFR’s clients and community. The Director of Development and Communications also manages media relations for IFR.
This position is both strategic and tactical, as it is responsible for oversight and execution of IFR’s annual development and communication plans. The ideal candidate is an energetic, passionate, and visionary individual with a strong commitment to addressing the needs of the Latinx community in San Francisco. They are a prolific multitasker and strategic thinker who can effectively convey complex topics verbally and in writing. The ideal candidate will also have an interest and understanding of public health, health disparities, equity, cultural competency and related issues impacting the Chicanx/Latinx/Indígenx communities of San Francisco.
Essential Job Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Leadership and Strategy
- Contribute positively to organizational culture and reflect IFR’s values
- Lead development and communications for the agency and actively engage with ED, Board of Directors, Concilio senior leadership, and staff to enhance organizational visibility, promote a culture of philanthropy, and identify funding needs and resource-generating opportunities
- Participate in strategic planning for IFR to ensure fund development and communication plans align with and are in service of evolving organizational goals
- Design and manage the execution of IFR’s development and communication plans to achieve annual revenue and communication goals to support IFR’s programs, operations, and growth
- Develop and responsibly track the annual budget for the Development and Communications team
- Supervise the Communications Specialist, including overseeing and supporting their training, skills development, and annual reviews
- Network, engage and cultivate relationships with foundation officers, current and major donors, donor prospects, elected and appointed officials, service providers, and community residents as appropriate to foster positive relationships and raise awareness of IFR’s community work
- Remain up-to-date and equipped to speak about the populations/communities served by IFR, their challenges and needs, and IFR’s various supports, interventions, and programs and services from both a Communications and Development perspective.
Fund Development
- Implement and annually update existing fund development and stewardship plans with fresh ideas to bring in new donors, best practices, and data-driven analysis
- Ensure development campaigns, appeals, events, and other development strategies are successfully coordinated and well-executed
- Lead strategy, execution and evaluation of all individual donor stewardship activities focused on identifying, cultivating, and soliciting new individual donors, retaining existing donors, and connecting them to the mission of IFR
- Manage and grow IFR’s Ollin monthly donor-giving program and major gift donor program
- Conduct prospect research to ensure IFR has a robust pipeline of local, regional, and national development and grant opportunities to pursue
- Responsible for managing agency grant calendar, including leading and coordinating a collaborative grant writing process in partnership with senior leadership and program directors to produce compelling grant proposals. Approximately 1 to 2 grants a month
- Build and sustain close relationships with foundation and corporate funders
- Collaborate with IFR’s leadership team in the development and implementation of small fundraising events to support program and organizational goals; manage all components of planning and executing
- Prepare progress-to-goal reports and development dashboard for IFR’s leadership team
- Oversee Communications Specialist in the process of maintaining accurate grant, donor, and event records, acknowledgements and reporting requirements in IFR’s Salesforce CRM
- Project manage the Executive Director’s fund development work, directing the ED where and how to best spend their time and efforts
- Cultivate relationships with the Board of Directors and support them both as a group and as individuals in identifying and tailoring their best development contributions to IFR. Staff the Board fund development committee and manage board development activities
Communications and Marketing
- Supervise the Communication Specialist in the design and production of the organizational website, quarterly electronic newsletters, social media toolkits, brochures, email development campaigns, blogs, and issue-based campaigns and other printed and electronic materials for programs, events and organizational needs
- Responsible for developing relevant media strategies for organizational activities, events, and issues; responding to or preparing appropriate staff to respond to media requests; and preparing and distributing press releases, PSAs, OpEds, and other multimedia communications.
- Collaborate with the Communications Specialist on the optimal design and production for an external stakeholder and donor-focused annual report
- Oversee, review and update IFR’s branding strategy annually
- Supervise Communications Specialist in the material review process to maintain compliance with the organization’s brand and policies, including appropriate uses of the agency logo and other external representations
- Oversee the archival library of IFR photos for use in online and print publications maintained by the Communications Specialist
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- 5-7 years of experience in a senior leadership role in nonprofit development, with a proven record of successfully increasing revenue annually.
- Extensive experience using CRM systems to strategize and execute development initiatives.
- Proven track record of successfully developing, managing, and executing development plans and development operations.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including strong editing capabilities.
- Strong project management/time management skills.
- Proven ability to develop, manage, and lead a team effectively.
- Ability to work independently and on teams to meet deadlines on a consistent basis and handle multiple tasks/projects.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel) and Google.
- A strong advocate for the Latinx community with a deep understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) issues.
- Strong knowledge of contemporary issues impacting the Latino community locally and at large
PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Proficiency in Salesforce and Adobe Creative Suite is highly desirable.
- Extensive experience in nonprofit grant writing.
- Demonstrated experience in media relations and leading comprehensive media strategies.
- Strong background in marketing, branding, and/or graphic design.
- Experience in developing cohesive and compatible communications strategies across multiple platforms
- Bilingual/bicultural competence
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND LICENSES
- A B.A./B.S. degree in a relevant field is preferred; an advanced degree in nonprofit management, communications, or a related field is a plus.
CONDITIONS OF CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT
- Must pass and maintain annual Tuberculosis Test (TB)
- Must pass Department of Justice Fingerprint screening
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS²
Salary Range: This is a full-time position with benefits, with an annual salary range of $120,000.00 - $130,000.00. Commensurate with work experience, qualifications, and education. All full-time positions are based on a minimum of (35) thirty-five hours per week.
This is a full-time exempt position at 35 hours a week. The position is eligible to participate in medical, dental, vision, and 403(b) plans, earn vacation, sick leave, paid holidays, two wellness days (birthday and hire date), and receive ongoing learning opportunities.
