IFR is excited to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community this month. For IFR, it is a special joy for us to recognize the Latinx and Afro-Latinx LGBTQ+ community for their many contributions, courageous visibility, and sheer determination to stand proud 365 days a year.

In the last few years, that hasn’t been an easy task as we’ve seen homophobia and transphobia reach new lows. It’s bad enough when we hear anti-gay slurs in the public, but when closed-minded elected officials participate in hate-inspired legislation, it is frightening. Passing bills that prevent transgender youth from getting the support they need or legislation that doesn’t allow individuals to say the word “gay” in classrooms is simply despicable.

Nevertheless, we know the queer community won’t let bigotry detract from the beauty and joyfulness of Pride. The symbolism of Pride is a persistent strobe light that reflects the historic and current diversity, challenges, and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community that nothing can diffuse.

Pride is global; it is unabashedly celebrated throughout the world as a tribute to all who have shed a life in the closet for a one that honors their full selves.

Pride symbolizes the liberation and empowerment of the LGBTQ+ community. As Program Director of Si a la Vida recently offered: “Pride is one way that we bring to live the concept of ¡Si Se Puede!”

To all the LGBTQ+ community, from all corners of the world, IFR joins in celebrating Pride throughout the month of June and the year.
